The fish pier is one of Alex's favorite things at the cape. While others may go there to see the seals and a brief sick thrill-seeking moment of watching hundreds and hundreds of pounds of dead fish sliding down the chute... Alex is completely fascinated by the whole process. Everyday we talk about the fish pier and he enjoys playing fish pier. The fishermen go out on the boat, catch lots of fish then go to the fish pier and unload the fish. The fish pier guy (whose name is Rick) pushes the button and the bucket goes up and fish are dumped down the chute. The fish are weighed and sorted then sent out to the markets where people buy them and eat them.
Some days we go and there are no fishing boats, so Alex chats with Rick. Often after watching many boats unload their fish, we go to the fish market so Alex can look at the lobsters in the tank. The tank is filled with fresh sea water that is constantly being pumped in. Sometimes Abbey (she works at the fish market) takes out a lobster for Alex to see and Alex will shake the lobster's claw and touch its feelers. Then they wave bye-bye to each other when the lobster goes back to swimming...
