Until today, Rory has been doing really well by all measures - except weight! It has basically stayed the same for awhile, until today when it is finally up nearly to her birth weight (today it's 6lbs 11.3oz, up 3 oz from yesterday.) There was a bit of a problem - apparently some of the nurses thought that TPN (her nutrition via her veins) had to be stopped whenever they gave her antibiotics. This meant that she was getting probably 5 to 10% fewer calories than what she was supposed to receive! On top of fixing that, she is also getting some food by mouth (5mls every 6 hours) and some through a feeding tube (6mls/hour, increasing by 1ml every 8 hours.) So she is now getting all of the TPN that she needs, plus a bit of food. We hope that this means that she starts gaining weight rapidly - certainly all of the other signs indicate that she should.
She has also prolapsed twice, which is a good sign that her bowels are ready for the second operation (but prolapses also have their dangers) - we hope that she can have her other surgery without being sent home in-between - we'd like to get it all done and not have to come back anytime soon!
The current plan is to continue to increase her food intake and to continue her antibiotics for another week. They will do the second operation when they are confident that she is thriving.
So overall, we are very pleased with her weight today (but we are always aware that her weight could go down tomorrow or something, so we try not to get too excited.) And she seems happy and healthy overall.
