So Rory is losing weight, she is now down to 5lbs 8oz- almost the weight she was when she went into the hospital. She is being followed by the academic pediatric team and gastroenterology (GI)- the super specialized group of liver transplant/intestine group. They are trying to figure out why Rory has been losing protein (albumin) and blood and not gaining weight. In the meantime, they are replacing her protein and will replace blood if she needs it.
Yesterday Rory had an upper endoscopy and colonscopy- (the GI specialist Dr Mohan, used a camera to look at her small and large intestines)to try to find the cause of her poor weight gain woes. They looked and didn't see much that to the naked eye that looks wrong. They took biopsies and sent off fluid and cultures to see if there were any microscopic changes that might account for what is going on with her... those results are pending and we don't know when they will come back.
In the meantime, Rory is on a special hypoallergenic formula diet, mama is pumping and storing breastmilk and going on a dairy free, peanut free and soy free diet in case Rory has an allergy to any of those things (these will be added back in eventually depending on what we find). Soooo, Angela will probably go from losing a ridiculous amount of weight to something beyond ridiculous- but she will be meeting with the nutritionist to try to do this in as healthy a way as possible.
Alex has been enjoying visiting Rory at the hospital, playing with toys in the playroom. He announced today that he didn't want to say goodbye to mama and dada at the elevator or the hospital. He's been having fun at tumbling, music and Jonah's. This morning Alex visited at the hospital and got to meet the whole general pediatrics team (med students, residents, attendings etc- a big mob scene). He sneezed and had all 20 gazillion people say bless you which he found so amusing that he kept trying to sneeze or cough to get their attention again. 8) Afterwards he played in Kalorama Park and saw some of his friends there, Eitan, Zoe and Maya. This afternoon, his babysitter, Rachel, is taking him to the zoo on this unseasonably warm (72 degrees) day today!
