Gifts (the only gifts he got were from Laura - 2 books and a monkey bib!) And the selection of his future career by picking one of a bunch of things layed out in front of him (a Chinese tradition) - apparently he is going to be a scholar (he chose the pen - the passport was grabbed seconds later.)
